Reskilling for a Changing World: Building Skills and Human Qualities Through Immersive Reality Training
With rapid advances in AI, digital technologies, globalization, and increasingly diverse ways of working, our professional environments are evolving at an unprecedented pace. The skills and knowledge required to thrive are constantly being updated. In fact, the importance of continuous learning only grows once we enter the workforce.
In recent years, reskilling—the process of acquiring new knowledge and skills—has gained significant attention. At the 2020 World Economic Forum in Davos, the “Reskilling Revolution” was announced, positioning reskilling as a critical global challenge. According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s 2022 Career Advancement Support through Reskilling initiative, about 95% of working adults in Japan feel the need to relearn skills to adapt to changes in their jobs.
A career is filled with turning points—moving from player to leader, from hands-on work to strategic roles, and beyond. At each stage, professionals must be able to adapt and switch to the skill sets required for the new role. This makes it essential to maintain a proactive attitude toward acquiring advanced expertise, pursuing certifications, and continuously expanding one’s capabilities.
Beyond technical expertise, there is an equally urgent demand for human skills—the ability to work effectively with diverse people in the workplace and the community. Communication, active listening, situational awareness, and problem-solving are among the capabilities that form the foundation of a sustainable career and lasting trust.
One powerful approach to developing both skillsets and human qualities is Immersive Reality Training. We all carry unconscious biases, fixed assumptions, and habitual ways of thinking. Breaking free from them is challenging—but learning in collaboration with others can be remarkably effective. By stepping into another person’s perspective and experiencing unfamiliar thoughts and behaviors, we move beyond our own boundaries. Living “as someone else” through trial and error not only strengthens skills but also fosters deeper human understanding.
Consider the case of someone who repeatedly makes harassing remarks at work despite multiple warnings. Often, such behavior stems from ingrained patterns of thinking and speaking that the person is not even aware of—and therefore struggles to change.
In such cases, we have them experience the other side: being in the position of the person on the receiving end. Taking on that role, they directly feel the impact of words spoken to them. What was once an abstract understanding becomes an embodied realization: “Now I truly understand how it feels.” This transformation—from knowing in theory to understanding in practice—becomes a deep learning experience that leads to real behavioral change.
Skills and human qualities are the two essential wheels that keep professionals moving forward in any environment. Immersive Reality Training offers a unique space to broaden perspectives, foster growth at career turning points, and develop talent in ways that traditional training often cannot. We invite you to make it a part of your organization’s human resource development strategy.
