“I Am Right” — How Experiential Learning Breaks Unconscious Bias
Thank you very much to everyone who joined our recent webinar, “Compliance Measures That Can’t Be Achieved by Knowledge Alone.” Although our time together was limited, I was delighted to share perspectives on the theme of compliance with so many participants.
As you may already recognize, simply following surface-level rules is not enough to prevent misconduct or harassment at its roots. We believe that true, lasting compliance is built on a foundation of inner qualities—such as self-reflection on one’s own behavior and values, and the sensitivity to see from another person’s perspective.
One of the biggest barriers to building such a foundation is unconscious bias—the hidden assumptions we carry without realizing it. We often believe, without question, that “I am right” and make daily decisions on that basis. Yet these unconscious beliefs and assumptions can be fertile ground for misunderstandings, strained relationships, and even organizational risk.
Overcoming this barrier requires environments where we can step into perspectives different from our own, as well as relationships that allow for open, safe dialogue. This is exactly where Immersive Reality Training plays a role—and one of the key messages I wanted to share during the webinar. When you take on another person’s role and look at the world through their eyes, moments of realization emerge. Past actions—your own or others’—may suddenly connect with what you are experiencing in that moment, allowing you to see yourself more objectively.
Following the webinar, participants shared feedback such as, “I wanted to hear more” and “It gave me a fresh opportunity to reflect.” These comments underscored the depth of the topic for me. That is why I believe it is essential to continue creating opportunities to explore these issues together. I look forward to keeping this conversation going with all of you.
